How the Test Works

In this process, a blood sample is treated with specialized fluorescent dyes (microscopic glowing tags) that attach to specific proteins on the cells.

The sample is then run through a flow cytometer machine, which shoots a laser beam at the cells. When the laser hits the dyed cells, the attached tags light up. The machine counts them individually to give precise quantities and percentages of CD4 and CD8 cells.

Preparation

  • No fasting is needed for this test. You can book any available slot.
  • Keep your doctor’s prescription or test request handy if you have one, and take regular medicines as your doctor has advised.
  • Tell the sample collector if you take blood thinners, and wear a sleeve that rolls above the elbow.
